The four founders built the school under the slogan of "divide et impera" which was really just a fancy way of saying "divide and reign". Frederick Forton took the courageous ones, Esme Equaire took the loyal ones, Moleena Mendner the wise ones, and Desmond Dolodus the ambitious ones. They all went along great for a while, but then they started fighting and, eventually quit, leaving the school in the hands of their most competent faculty member: Liam Hamilton.
Headmaster Hamilton was the one who started the house glee clubs. With his love for music, the so-called "Musical" Headmaster created the different glee clubs, one for each house. It was his way of starting some friendly competition among the houses. Even when another had taken over the school, the legacy lived on.
It was not friendly at all. Flashforward to the present.
There is much rivalry between houses. In an attempt to unite the school, Will Schuester asks the Headmaster whether or not he could make a glee club, where everyone can join, regardless of the house they belonged in. Interested, the headmaster said yes, and in a week, the New Directions were formed.
Everyone hated them. The people in their respective houses said they were 'traitors', and the house glee clubs thought they were stupid for even entertaining this idea of having a 'rogue' glee club.
But these New Directions were determined. Sure they were the weirdest, most heterogeneous bunch you ever met, but they were also the most united.
