During the time of the Dark Rebellion (1970-1981) many were faced with the decision of The Light or The Dark. The Light were those who chose to fight against the forces of evil, while The Dark chose to rid the Wizarding World of those who were not of Pure-Blood and Half-Blood status. During the mid-1970s the Dark side started to get its name. Soon they were being called Death Eaters, followers of the Dark Lord Voldemort. With his increase of power and followers Muggle-borns and Muggles alike were being mercilessly tortured and slaughtered.
During this time and organization was formed by one of the most powerful wizards of the Wizarding World, Albus Dumbledore. This organization was notably known as the Order of the Phoenix. Dumbledore was adamant of having the most trustworthy advocates on his side. Some of which included Ministry officials, Healers, former students, and village workers. The Order fought valiantly against the Death Eaters and there were countless causalities on both sides.
During the summer of 1978, Severus Snape a former Slytherin chose to devote himself solely to the Dark Arts and joined the Death Eaters. He played the part of a loyal Death Eater for two years, at which point he overheard the prophecy that would change the Wizarding World.
"The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches. … Born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies … and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not … and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives. … The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies…"
Before thinking twice about it he reported his findings to the Dark Lord. But as he thought about it he realized that he had away out. A child would be born, and he or she would have the power to conquer the Dark Lord. Thinking only about self-preservation he turned to Dumbledore for guidance. The only way Dumbledore felt confident to trust his former pupil was for Snape to turn spy for the Order as a way to repent for all the awful things that he had done.
As a spy for the Order, Snape came across several of his old classmates. One Lily Evans, quickly caught his interest. After Dumbledore informed the Order about Snape spying for them, Lily had a change of heart. She put aside all the resentment she had for Severus aside and saw him as a changed man. But the rest of the Order weren’t so easily convinced. However they decided that they needed to trust Dumbledore’s word that Snape was fact a reformed man.
As the summer of 1980 progressed Lily and Severus reformed their relationship and secretly married in the August of 1980. And as November arrived so did the news that Frank and Alice Longbottom were expecting a child.
As news of this approached the Dark Lord, Snape was convinced that this was the family that the Dark Lord would target. With this revelation the Longbottom family was placed under the Fidelius Charm, and had several Order members placed around the perimeter of their home.
But as a year passed and October came to an end the Longbottom home was infiltrated by the Dark Lord and a half dozen Death Eaters. Alice and Frank didn’t stand a chance against Voldemort, and soon met their death. Alice did what any mother would do and put herself between Voldemort and her young son, sacrificing her life for his. When the Dark Lord turned his wand on the boy, and cast the Killing Curse it rebounded and vanquished Lord Voldemort.
While the Death Eaters outside attacked the Order members, James Potter tortured to insanity by Bellatrix Lestrange. Benjy Fenwick was blown to pieces by Augustus Rookwood, Peter Pettigrew escaped at the first sign of trouble. But before the Death Eaters could reach The-Boy-Who-Lived and finish the job that their Master couldn’t, reinforcements in the form of Order members and Aurors showed up taking several of the Death Eaters into custody.
Neville was placed into the care of his grandmother, and the rest of the Wizarding World moved on with their lives thinking that He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named was gone forever. Little did they know that during the early 1990s Voldemort was already in the processes of returning to life with the Philosopher’s Stone, Chamber of Secrets, and the Triwizard Tournament.
But now with Neville and his friends in their fifth year at Hogwarts, one can only anticipate what will happen.
