WHEN THE LIGHTS GO OUTwill you take me home with you? teddy lupin had always been surrounded by love. and yet, he had never before considered himself to be the sort of man worthy of it himself. he didn’t grow up thinking that he was going to fall in love. he wasn’t raised wondering about whether or not he’d be getting married someday. and sure, marriage still wasn’t in his dreams. to be honest, teddy didn’t care whether he was ever married or not. that sort of thing wasn’t a huge deal to him, at nineteen. plenty of people were really getting their lives underway at nineteen years of age. they really were getting married, or getting engaged. well, a serious relationship was enough for teddy at the time. he knew what love is, and he had it with victoire weasley. the two had started dating just a few years ago, but honestly, teddy knew that she was the one. there wasn’t anyone else that he ever wanted to spend his life with. marriage would honestly seem the most logical next step for most people; he knew this. but he wasn’t sure he wanted this... sure, it wasn’t like he planned on ever leaving victoire or loving anyone else but her. but marriage? it seemed so permanent... it made it sound like he was planning on changing his mind, was planning on doing more in his life than being with her, but he honestly and truly wasn’t. and that was probably why marriage had never come up as a topic of conversation between the couple. well, that and victoire was only seventeen. a marriage at this age seemed absurd. they weren’t in the seventeen hundreds anymore; people just didn’t get married that young in this day and age. so even if marriage had been what teddy wanted? he wouldn’t have subjected his victoire to that. he wanted her to have every opportunity that she could in life. a married man was so much different than one in a relationship, a dating man. teddy knew that. and that was probably what scared him the most.
and yet, ted remus lupin loved victoire with all of his heart. he would do anything for her. he would jump in front of the hogwarts express for her if he had to. sure, teddy was extremely loyal; he would do such a thing for almost anyone in his family. but yet, victoire... victoire was different. that beautiful woman had touched his heart in a way that he hadn’t known possible. not that long ago they had been happy little tykes playing in the yard outside shell cottage. not that long ago he’d given her a gentle kiss on the cheek before departing for his first year of hogwarts. and now here he was, seeing the love of his life off on the train for her last year of hogwarts. after this year, they could really be together. no matter what his opinion on marriage was, after all, teddy had no aversion to the idea of living with her. he adored it, actually. he’d get to spend more time with her than he already did. and with only a year left in his auror training, the nineteen-year-old feared that their time together would already be limited. he’d be out in the world, doing good, living up to his parents and making a difference in the wizarding community and in the world. teddy was determined; when he said he was going to do something, he was going to do it, no matter what anyone else said. not even victoire could have stopped him from making this career — or more like life — choice. he cared what she thought, yes, and her opinion mattered to him, most definitely, of course it did. but when it came to this? he knew that it was what he wanted and was going to do. if you asked him, teddy didn’t really think he had any other choice. what else would he do with his life, after all? it was what his parents would have wanted for him. and besides, all he really wanted to do was to make a difference, and what better way to do that than by becoming an auror? that was where all the real difference was made, after all. he’d be keeping the wizarding community safe.
but right now? he was going to make sure victoire was safe. he’d dreaded this moment. when she went off to school, he’d rarely be able to see her. they’d made plans to coordinate on her hogsmeade weekends. he’d head up there to meet with her for the day. but chances were he’d have more rigorous training during some of those dates. and during the rest of the year? he wouldn’t really get to see her a lot. she’d be busy, he’d be busy. there was a good chance that he wouldn’t get to see his love until at least christmas. and if he was abroad during that time, heaven forbid, because the poor guy would blow a gasket. christmas was already important to him, and especially if he hadn’t seen his girlfriend — and the rest of his family, too — in what seemed like forever. when you were as close with your family as teddy lupin was, being away from them for any amount of time always seemed like forever. and this break before he saw victoire again was going to seem like forever. so they’d simply have to get out all of their kissing now, teddy thought with a smirk. he was going to miss this about her. she always had the sweetest kisses. and when they turned to something more... ted grinned against her lips, pulling back a moment to rest his forehead against hers. “i l- ...” there was someone by him, someone he recognized, and he was chattering away. “wh- .. james! what are you... go away!” he ignored the young boy’s complaints and shooed him again. he saw enough of james whenever he went ‘round to the potters’ house, which happened at least four times a week. it didn’t matter right now what james had to say. all that mattered to him right now was victoire. he continued his argument with james until the boy finally left, and he turned back to victoire with a sigh. “i love you,” he said again, without interruption this time. “you promise you’ll write? and keep me updated on everything? i want to know the first hogsmeade weekend the minute you know.” teddy smiled, leaning in and giving her a sweet kiss on the nose, his arms still holding her close to him. why had he been the lucky one?

victoire decided from an early age that teddy lupin was going to be her husband. one day, as she told her mother this, around the age of seven or so...her mother simply chuckled and asked if victoire had informed teddy of these plans. even from a young age, victoire hadn't been easy to cause to blush...but she could still remember how badly her face had flushed. at that point, they had been just friends, best friends in the entire world, if victoire had any say in the matter. he was so sweet and kind to her, and while she didn't know anything about true love firsthand, victoire just simply knew that this must be it. hogwarts had been enjoyable thus far for a plethora of reasons - it simply wasn't the type of place where one could be miserable at all, really. but, the number one reason why she loved it was because she got to be there...with teddy.
it was so strange that she would be starting a new year without him. there would be no more cuddling in the stands during a quidditch match, snogging in the room of requirement when they should have been sleeping, teasing each other and their friends in the courtyard instead of doing their coursework. of course, victoire was a fairly popular girl, and she knew that she wouldn't be extremely unhappy or lonely...but still, it was going to be strange and somewhat lonely without teddy there with her. this summer had been one of the best of victoire's life. they were finally old enough where her parents let them venture off, exploring muggle london and other areas of europe. the amount of time that they spent watching her cousins was minimal, though victoire secretly thrilled in being able to help her small cousins prepare for their first years of hogwarts, as well.
the night before leaving for hogwarts, victoire tossed and turned. she wasn't ready to say goodbye yet, even though this wouldn't be an official goodbye. teddy wasn't going away, so he would be able to visit her...and they most certainly weren't going to break up. victoire was simply afraid of what might happen, of what might change. victoire took deep breaths the entire morning, barely being able to choke down one of her mother's famous beignets. after seven years of packing her trunk, victoire was pretty much of a champ at being able to pack quickly...last minute. she gave her mother and father both kisses on the cheek as they all ventured to king's cross. victoire hastily pushed through the barrier, looking around for teddy.
he was standing near the rest of her rather large family, all waiting to see off her and her cousins. victoire waved quick hellos, racing over to teddy without a second look at the rest of her family. victoire knew that it was probably inappropriate to kiss in front of your family, but victoire didn't care. she threw her bags down at her feet, her trunk making a rather loud noise as it made contact with the concrete. "oh, teddy," a tear dribbled down her face as she squeezed him tighter to her. his kisses were one of her favorite things in the world, and she hated knowing that the amount she would be able to receive was significantly dropping. "i love you so much." she breathed in the smell of his after shave, the scent immediately putting the anxiety in her stomach to rest. this was still teddy. her teddy. and nothing was going to change that.
"james, bugger off!" victoire spoke in a hasty tone, shooing off her younger cousin with an uneasy smile. james was one of her favorite cousins, but right now, she simply could not be bothered with anyone but teddy. victoire reached up to push some hair out of teddy's eyes, reaching up to give him a kiss on the forehead. "of course i'm going to write, and i'll see you often, at least...i better,"
she gave another uneasy smile, dropping her arms from around his neck to take his hands in hers. the feeling of their fingers laced together was one of the best feelings to her, so familiar and comfortable and just... right.victoire refused to allow herself to cry in the middle of this crowded train station. a few of their school friends waltzed by, laughing and saying hello to the couple and telling teddy how much they envied that he was done with school. "what are your plans, anyway?" victoire asked, leaning her head against his chest. they had tried as best as they could to avoid talking about this time, but now that it was here, there was no avoiding it, really.
"wait, i have something for you," victoire dug around in her bag, pulling out a cashmere burgundy sweater. "you know how i got that muggle sewing machine last year? well, i've been fooling around with it, and i made this for you," she grinned sheepishly, taking one of the sleeves and folding it back to reveal a golden locket-esque heart sewn onto the inside. "it's my heart, so you're always wearing it on your sleeve." [/blockquote][/blockquote] this is for BETH AS TEDDY LUPIN! it came out to be a lovely 858 words long.

WHEN THE LIGHTS GO OUTwill you take me home with you? when you were in love with someone, you knew it. when it was the right person, when it was “the one,” you could just tell. and teddy knew that was what victoire was to him. he never wanted to spend his life or, hell, more than a few minutes, with any other woman. right now, having to say goodbye to her for her last year at hogwarts, it was practically tearing him apart. he didn’t want to say goodbye; he didn’t want to ever have to say goodbye to her. god, he just loved her so much. teddy hadn’t gone into this relationship years ago with the intent of this happening; it had all just occurred on its own. teddy had no idea that he would someday marry this beautiful, outstanding, amazing, marvelous woman in front of him. those sort of things, you didn’t see them coming. hell, even right now, at nineteen, teddy wasn’t looking for getting married. though he knew in his heart that if victoire wanted it, and she asked him about marriage, he’d do it in a heartbeat. she could take his hand right now and they’d apparate to a chapel and be wed this very minute. he would do anything for her. it pained him, then, to have to say goodbye today when it wasn’t something that she wanted, either. neither of them wanted to leave. teddy remembered the first year he went off to hogwarts and couldn’t take victoire; that had sucked. this, however, was beyond anything he’d expected. it was so much worse. he’d rather take off a year of his auror training and go back to school with her. actually, he’d much rather victoire be able to fast forward a year and graduate so that they could do whatever the hell they wanted together. one more year, though.
one more year. what were they going to do, then? did victoire really want to get married? marriage was a huge step. it wasn’t just a milestone, it was a boulder. not a bad one, of course not, because as he’d said, teddy would instantly do that for his love. but he wasn’t looking for it, either. he had a lot of things to focus on right now and marriage, well, it just seemed to make everything a little more complicated. this meeting right now was beyond complicated. saying goodbye sucked. a soft, sad smile caressed the nineteen-year-old’s face as he gently raised a thumb and wiped away his victoire’s tears. “don’t cry, love,” he said soothingly. he placed a simple kiss on her nose. “i’ll come home when i can, and you’ll be the first thing i’ll worry about. i won’t even go home, actually. i’ll go straight to hogsmeade and you can meet me there. i can help you sneak out if you need to. okay?” he gently kissed her again before she moved her hands to his, their fingers lacing together easily, effortlessly. it just felt right. anything with victoire felt right. she could make anything feel right to teddy. she was perfect for him; she completed him. teddy simply wouldn’t be himself without victoire anymore. when they were younger, they were the greatest of friends, and even then it felt weird to be doing anything without victoire. but now? it would be unimaginable. teddy would never even suggest something as outrageous as that. he would wait there for her on her graduation, and after that, they would really be inseparable. teddy wouldn’t let victoire out of his sight. unless, of course, she wanted him to. no matter how much it pained him, teddy knew he’d do anything for her. and if that was what she wanted, he’d give her even space.
however, she didn’t seem to want that right now, which was good because it would have been so hard for teddy to give that simple request to her. he never wanted this moment to end. it wasn’t particularly happy, no, but once it was over, that meant victoire was leaving, and he didn’t know the next time he would get to see her. it wasn’t like the muggle world, where victoire could just shoot him a text when she got to school. she couldn’t just up and call him when she found out the date of her first hogsmeade weekend. owls weren’t quite that fast. they were quicker than the muggle mail system, but it seemed that the rest of the world had the wizards beat out when it came to their most common form of communication. an owl took a little while, while a text took seconds. too bad technology like that didn’t work within the castle grounds, or teddy would have gone out and gotten victoire a phone the first minute he could.
teddy’s arms wrapped gently around victoire and he held her close to his chest as she spoke. “i don’t really know what’s all coming,” he admitted. “i’ve got my second year of auror training. i don’t know where they’ll be taking me. i’m assuming at least part of it’ll be within the ministry, like it was last year, but who knows, right?” he kissed the top of her head, his arms rubbing her back gently and soothingly. he’d try to make this moment seem like any other one they’d have, and not like they were saying goodbye for who knew how long. but when she was digging in her bag, she was intrigued. the words got caught in teddy’s throat momentarily as he looked at the sweater she’d made him, with the heart sewn in and all. “victoire...” he murmured quietly. and slowly, teddy smiled. “it’s really good, you’re getting good. thank you.” he lifted her chin with his finger and gave her a long, loving kiss. “i love it. i love you.” he smiled again, kissing her once more for good measure and pulling her into a hug. “i’m really sorry i didn’t think to get you a going away present, actually... you’ll have to wait a few days, i’ll send something along with venus.” his owl. the goddess of love. it seemed appropriate, when one of the only people he sent anything to was victoire.
